Responses of the extraocular horizontal rectus and splenius capitis muscles to stimulation of the horizontal canal nerve in cats

Abstract
In urethane anesthetized cats, a unilateral horizontal semicircular canal nerve was selectively stimulated with square-wave pulses, and the reflex responses of the extraocular horizontal (medial and lateral ) rectus and splenius capitis muscles
were
recorded by means of electromyography.
1) The medial rectus muscle was excited by stimulation of the ipsilateral horizontal canal nerve and was inhibited by stimulation of the contralateral canal nerve.
2) The lateral rectus muscle was excited by stimulation of the contralateral horizontal canal nerve and was inhibited by the ipsilateral canal.
3) The splenius capitis muscle was inhibited by stimulation of the ipsilateral horizontal canal nerve and was excited by the contralateral canal.
Based on the above experimental results, pathways of the vestibuloocular and vestibulocollic neurons connecting the horizontal canal (receptor organ) nerve and the horizontal rectus and splenius capitis muscles (effector organs) were
schematically
diagrammed. The inhibitory vestibular (nucleus) neurons exhibited uncrossed (ipsilateral) path and the excitatory neurons crossed (contralateral) one. The uncrossed ipsilateral paths of the inhibitory neurons appear to be in good agreement with
those
